Water and Energy Security through Mircohydels - WES Phase-II Studies, Pakistan (April – June 2016)

Pakistan

After the completion of recent micro hydropower schemes in the Chitral District of Pakistan, the availability of electricity and communication via mobile phones has opened new horizons for business development in the region. The Aga Khan Rural Support Program has contracted INTEGRATION to implement the 2nd Phase of the project "Water & Energy Security through Micro-hydels (WES)" to stimulate local/regional business ideas while keeping in view the protection of natural resources.

The baseline study is intended to stimulate private and public investments that will consume the hydro-energy generated by the new mico-hydels and mobilize more employment in the region. Furthermore, it will develop integrated water governance strategy and linked actions on ecological use of the resources in the catchment areas in the region. Finally, the project will also aid in planning an upgradation and extension of the local transmission and distribution networks in order to offer electricity to more villages by establishing a regional grid.
