The project's general aim is to contribute to the integration of the productive crafts sector in Colombia into the current economic and social development process, by perfecting the quality and competitiveness of their products through strengthening the design factor.

The specific aims are:

• To formulate and carry out projects to develop and manage craft products and micro-businesses in accordance with market demand;
• To conduct studies in the Laboratory's fields of activity and interest to broaden technical and scientific knowledge and encourage the continuous development of craft production,
• To establish cooperation and technological exchange relationships at all levels and in all areas in which the Laboratory operates;
• To offer training and qualification programmes for design specialists, and for technicians and professionals who specialize in craft development and production;
• To compile, process and disseminate technical information on production factors, raw materials and protection of the environment;
• To advise the craft sector on design and technology matters;
• To form regional organizations so that they can interpret and implement the design policy and formulate strategies, programmes and projects for the craft sector;
• To strengthen the identity of producers and micro-businesses on national and international markets.
